When the time came, Admiral Halsey approved our plan and said to Comdr. Roger Simpson and me: "Roger and Harold, these are our boys. " On 29 August 1945, major battle units of the US Navy sailed into Tokyo Bay. This started sixty-one hours of non-stop liberation. The first camp liberated was Camp Omori, where American, Australian, Canadian, English, New Zealanders, and Italian prisoners were held, and where prisoners in the Kempei Tai Headquarters Prison in Tokyo were transferred after the cessation of hostilities.

Gen. Curtis E. LeMay. LeMay joined the 20th Air Force as commander of the 58th Wing while it was based in India. He had earlier earned a reputation in Europe as a fierce and innovative war fighting aerial commander. He was the Army Air Force's equivalent of the army's Gen. George Patton. Army Air Force commander Gen. Henry "Hap" Arnold, commanded the 20th Air Force from his Pentagon headquarters in Washington, DC. This organization was truly a strategic air force. It was formed to assure that the B-29s, with their special capabilities, were used for strategic bombing and not subject to service by local commanders who might be tempted to use them for day-to-day tactical bombing missions.

No white caps could be seen on the waters below us. The airplane was functioning smoothly. Everything looked great! Shortly it would be dark, but right now we were enjoying a great view of the sunset, one of the fringe benefits of flying over the beautiful Pacific Ocean. As the sky began to darken, I could see the many gauges on my flight engineer's instrument panel begin to glow in the rays of the night lights playing over them. I could barely see Harlan Fintel, our navigator, sitting across the cabin from me.
